Holistic Nutrition

Holistic nutrition embodies more than just a healthy diet. It includes all aspects of lifestyle, incorporating physical, emotional and spiritual health to create a state of well-being.

It is sometimes difficult to navigate through the mass of ever changing information we are presented with via different media outlets. All the information can be conflicting and overwhelming. To add, what works for one person may not necessarily work for someone else.

This is where a holistic nutritionist can help. We help you make sense of the foods you should be eating, and the ones you should possibly be avoiding. Because maybe you know somewhere inside, intuitively, you’re just not doing it quite right.

We work with you to develop a plan at a pace you are comfortable with, to help return you to a healthy, balanced state, using a natural whole foods approach. After all, you are what you eat, absorb and digest! The foods we eat should nourish our bodies, not be the cause of of the many health issues that plague today's society.

" The food we eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison."
Ann Wigmore

Allergy Testing and Mineral/Heavy Metal Hair Analysis

Clinical studies and research suggest food allergies identified by IgG testing can be a major contributing factor in many chronic health conditions we see today, such as asthma, abdominal pain, anxiety, depression, dermatitis, fatigue, hypertension, hyperactivity, hair loss, headaches, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, joint pain and inflammation, respiratory problems and many skin conditions. IgG reactions can take place in minutes, but can also arise hours or days later. Many of us eat offending foods and are unaware of their potential effects. Testing can help determine if food reactions are contributing to physical or mental symptoms.

Hair analysis is uniquely suited for measuring toxic elements, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminum. It also provides key information on the absorption and assimilation of nutritionally important elements such as, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium, sodium and potassium.

Holistic Nutrition FAQ's

WHAT IS A REGISTERED HOLISTIC NUTRITIONIST?
Registered Holistic Nutritionists are trained in natural nutrition and integral therapies. Our primary role is to educate on the effects of optimal nutrition with an emphasis on natural, whole foods to give the body the fuel it desperately needs. We are qualified to assess your unique dietary needs and design a lifestyle program specifically suited for you. We do not treat disease, we treat and work with people to find and help correct nutritional causes of imbalanced health. We look at the ‘whole’, the spiritual and emotional as well as the physical body.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DIETICIAN AND A REGISTERED HOLISTIC NUTRITIONIST?
Both dieticians and RHN’s work with food. Dieticians are government regulated and they must adhere to Canada’s Food Guide. The emphasis is on calories and not necessarily the quality of food they recommend. They follow generalized programs to treat symptoms of specific diseases. It is a 'one size fits all' paradigm that can be successful, but the root cause of the problem is rarely addressed. A registered holistic nutritionist takes into consideration that each person is biochemically different. Our philosophy teaches clean whole foods, the importance of minimizing stress and empowering our clients to make informed choices, reading labels, avoiding additives and toxic chemicals, and really getting back to basics with our food. We go beyond just food, and meet our clients at a pace that is comfortable for them, without judgement.
WHAT KIND OF THINGS CAN AN RHN HELP ME WITH?
We can help with allergies, digestive disorders such as IBS, stress and anxiety, depression, weight problems, arthritis, diabetes, elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels, fatigue, low energy, insomnia, skin issues, emotional eating and food addictions.
ARE YOUR SERVICES COVERED BY EXTENDED HEALTH PLANS?

Some insurance companies cover our services through their employees benefits package. Some plans that include registered massage therapy, homeopathy, and osteopathy may also cover holistic nutrition.

WHAT IS A GMO?
A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of and unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. Because this involves the transfer of genes, GMO’s are also called transgenic organisms. This process may be called Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM). They are one and the same.
THESE GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS, ARE THEY SAFE?

There is fast growing evidence of harm from GMO’s. Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with genetically modified food including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. Health Canada does not plan to do research on genetically modified foods since they are not seen as a risk to Canadians. Before the FDA decided to allow GMO’s into food without labeling, FDA scientists had repeatedly warned that genetically modified foods can create unpredictable, hard to detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged long-term safety studies, but were ignored. They have found their way into most of the processed foods on Canadian grocery store shelves. We are currently the third largest producer of GMO crops in the world.
